IEC TO BRIEF COMMITTEE ON ITS READINESS TO HOLD LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) will tomorrow (24 May 2016) brief the Select Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs on its state of readiness to hold the upcoming local government elections as planned for 3 August this year.
 
According to Committee Chairperson, Mr Jihad Mohapi, the IEC has been involved in a number of court cases recently regarding the forthcoming elections and as such, the Committee deemed it necessary to call before it the Commission to ascertain its readiness to hold the elections.

Furthermore, the Committee will be briefed by the North West Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs on the status of interventions involving a number of municipalities that have been placed under provincial administration.

The Administrator of the Madibeng Local Municipality will update the Committee about the situation in that municipality.
