South Africans are encouraged to participate in the public hearings on land reform, which get under way on Tuesday.

A delegation of the Joint Constitutional Review Committee will kick off the hearings in the Northern Cape before making its way across the country, to all nine provinces.

The delegation will hold at least three meetings in each province to gather responses from South Africans into the possible amendment of Section 25 of the Constitution, which deals with expropriation of land without compensation.

The committee was instructed by the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces to ascertain whether a review of Section 25 of the Constitution and other clauses are necessary, to make it possible for the state to expropriate land in the public interest without compensation, and propose the necessary constitutional amendments where necessary.

Members of the public are urged to attend the various meetings in their respective provinces to express their views on the contentious issue.
