Germany Embassy: Media Launch of Violence Prevention Programme in Mamelodi

German Ambassador Walter Lindner and Councillor Kgosientso Ramokgopa, Executive Mayor of Pretoria, will jointly launch the new programme “Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading” in Mamelodi East, Pretoria on October 14, 2015 at 2 p.m. The programme is financed through the German Development Bank (KfW) on behalf of the German government and implemented by its partner municipality the City of Tshwane. The German government contributes a grant of 5 million EUR (R 75 million) to the programme, which is half of the total funding.


To gain an impression of the challenging living conditions of the people in Mamelodi the Ambassador and the Executive Mayor will talk to several community leaders during a walk-about in the township.


German Ambassador Lindner welcomes the launch of the programme: “The high rate of crime is still one of the biggest obstacles in South African social development. In particular, it affects the most vulnerable in society, women and children. Violence prevention is one of the top priorities in Germany’s cooperation with South Africa”.
The programme will improve safety in public places, provide infrastructure for safer schools, host a family centre with counselling personal and leisure activities and offers educational training (computer courses and career guidance) for young people to improve their employment opportunities.


In its first stage, the programme will positively affect the security standard of 50.000 inhabitants. The programme in Mamelodi East is

going to be implemented in the same way as the successful violence prevention programme in Khayelitsha, Western Cape.
