Gauteng Provincial Government to launch the “Empower a Girl Child to Lead” campaign

31st July 2017

Gauteng Premier David Makhura will on Tuesday 01 August, mark the beginning of Women’s Month by launching the Empowering a Girl Child to Lead Campaign.

The campaign is a multi-sectoral campaign, that will see the provincial government, civil society, NGOs and the business community come together  in a concerted effort to address the plight of the girl child in the province especially the issue of teenage pregnancy, increased  HIV infection  rate, gender based violence, inequality and its underlying  causes.

The plight of young girls in the province was further exacerbated by the spate of killings of young women by their intimate partners (intimate partner femicide) in domestic violence related incidents.

This multi-sectoral approach, is unique in that beyond its specific focus on the girl child, is the range of experiences and abilities being brought together from different organisations and across various fields of work to find an amicable solution to the plight of girls and young women in the province.

Some of the partners include Cell C Foundation, Commission for Gender equality, Ithemba Rape & Trauma Support Centre, UNICEF, UN Women amongst others.

Members of the media are invited as follows:

Date:               01 August 2017
Venue:            Aurora Girls High School in Soweto
