GAUTENG: Gauteng Traffic Police arrest a speedster for clocking at 222 km per hour

The Gauteng Traffic Police High Speed Unit arrested a 30 year old man this morning for driving at 222 km per hour on the N1 towards Bloemfontein. The man was caught travelling in a Silver Mercedes Benz GLE AMG and told officers he was rushing to Bloemfontein.

The speedster was arrested on the spot and taken to Vanderbijlpark police station where he was formally charged with reckless and negligent driving as well as an alternative charge of exceeding the general speed limit. The suspect is expected to appear in Vanderbijlpark Magistrate tomorrow.

“Driver behavior on our roads is not at a desirable level and therefore this calls for the intensification of road safety education. Majority of road fatalities are as a result of excessive speeding, reckless and negligent driving as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.

As Gauteng City Region, we will intensify the patrol of freeways, streets and public places in clearly marked vehicles as an available means for the prevention of road traffic violations.  I particularly like to call upon the Law Enforcement Agencies to deal decisively with motorists who continue to disobey the rules of our roads and continue to conduct themselves with impunity.” said MEC Nkosi-Malobane.
