On behalf of the provincial government and the people of Gauteng, Premier David Makhura has conveyed sincere condolences to the Mekoa family and the music industry at large following the passing of legendary musician and teacher, Jonny Mekoa.

The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation is working closely with the family to give Mekoa a deserving send-off.

Mekoa has done a lot in developing young artists.  He established the Gauteng Music Academy in 1994, which focused on teaching jazz music to young aspiring musicians.

In 2015, Mekoa was conferred with the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver, an award for South African citizens who have excelled in arts, culture, literature, music, journalism and sport.

“We will forever be grateful for Mekoa’s musical skills, more so because, he later imparted his knowledge with both passion and perseverance to the youth of South Africa.  We have lost a remarkable talent,” said Premier Makhura.
