Gauteng Premier, David Makhura has expressed the Gauteng Provincial Government’s sorrow at the news of the untimely death of a distinguished communicator and anti-apartheid activist, Ronnie Mamoepa.

Mamoepa died on Saturday at the age of 56 following complications arising from a stroke he suffered last month.

At the time his death, Mamoepa was a spokesperson for Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“On behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government, let me pass our heartfelt condolences to the Mamoepa family, friends, comrades and the entire government communications fraternity.  We would like to urge them to remain strong during this difficult time,” said Makhura.

Mamoepa was one of the youngest prisoners on Robben Island. Some of his communication experience includes serving as head of communications for the ANC Regional Executive Committee, and as head of communications and spokesperson for the first Gauteng Premier between 1994 and 1996.

He has also served as a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and in 1998 was selected as a South African candidate for the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowship in Philadelphia, United States.
