Gauteng commemorates International Day of Persons with Disabilities

1st December 2017

Gauteng Premier, David Makhura will on Sunday, 3 December 2017 address the provincial commemoration to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The day, observed under the theme “Strengthening self-representation: Young people with disabilities building on the legacy of OR Tambo and Friday Mavuso towards an Inclusive 2030” will provide an opportunity to reflect on the progress made and the challenges faced in advancing the rights of people with disabilities.

The day is celebrated annually on 3 December.  It is aimed at promoting an understanding of disability issues and it mobilises support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness and integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

This year’s commemoration coincides with the celebration of 23 years of democracy in South Africa and 33 years since Disabled People South Africa was launched.
