Twenty four hours before the expected signing of South Sudan’s revitalised peace deal, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO) has accused government forces of carrying out fresh attacks in Yei River State which borders Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

In a Tuesday statement SPLM-IO deputy spokesperson, Lam Paul Gabriel, said government forces had left their trenches and attacked opposition defensive positions at Kendiri and Mangalatore in Kajo-Keji County of Yei River State, adding that fighting was still continuing.

Last April the ceasefire commission said in a report that the government, SPLM-IO and National Salvation Front (NAS) forces had continued to attack civilians with total impunity while ignoring signed agreements.

Gabriel further accused Juba of other recent attacks and said weapons were being transported by airplane from the capital to the Yei airstrip

"These are indicators that the regime is launching an all-out war against peace in Yei River State and other parts of the country," he added before calling on regional bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), to hold Juba responsible for ceasefire violations.
