Freestate: MEC Butane Komphela urges motorists to drive carefully following tragic accident on R26

The MEC of Police, Roads and Transport, Honourable Butane Komphela, expressed his shock on the horrific accident that happened today on the R26 route near Ladybrand where six road workers died.

The road workers were busy with road maintenance when they were hit by a truck carrying bricks. The truck gambolled through all the warning signs and hit the road workers. Another truck was able to stop just on time at the accident scene. Five men between the ages of 20 – 30 died instantly while another man died shortly after the accident.

Mr Komphela said that it is a very sad that road workers are killed in this tragic way while on duty. He expressed his deepest condolences to the family members of the deceased. The workers were working for Roliflex Trading Construction Company.

Mr. Komphela also said that motorist and truck drivers should be careful and should obey road signs and reduce speed near road construction sites.
