The Cederberg municipality has suffered extensive infrastructure damage during the recent flooding, amounting to R309 million so far. During a parliamentary oversight visit conducted by the Standing Committee on Infrastructure, it was revealed that the municipality has incurred extensive damage to critical infrastructure.

The breakdown of the damages is as follows:
• Civils: R56 million
• Electrical: R6 million
• Farms/Agri infrastructure: R97 million
• Municipal roads (specifically Citrusdal main road): R150 million
Efforts are currently underway to calculate the damages to district, provincial, and national roads and over 100 water and sewerage pumps. The DA-run Western Cape Government continues to work around the clock to assist in repairing damaged infrastructure.

Access roads to and from Citrusdal have been washed away, effectively cutting off the town from services, transportation, exports and imports, neighbouring farming communities and tourists. The R303 road has since been re-opened.

MPP Matlhodi Maseko said: “The Cederberg municipality has been absolutely devastated by the recent floodings, but the Western Cape Government, alongside the various other stakeholders are making great strides in repairing critical infrastructure.

So far, the R303 road has been opened, electricity supply to various towns has been secured, water supply has been restored, and relief and shelter have been provided to displaced people.

The Standing Committee on Infrastructure made a resolution, and resolved to visit Matzikama municipality next to assess the flood damage”
