| FFPlus: Statement by Corne Mulder, Freedom Front Plus spokesperson, on corruption in the Department of Home Affairs (10/12/2009) |
"The Freedom Front Plus welcomes the suspension of 31 officials of Home Affairs due to their involvement in illegal registration of births. The investigations of Home Affairs in this regard are producing results. With this action the Minister of Home Affairs, Ms. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and her department are causing the general public to become more convinced that Home Affairs is the most corrupt government department," Dr. Corné Mulder, the chief spokesperson on Home Affairs for the Freedom Front Plus says. "Home Affairs works with the status of people in that they are responsible for the awarding and issuing of status giving documentation. In this regard no mistake or corruption can be tolerated. That is why it is not acceptable for officials to keep on receiving their salaries until a disciplinary hearing is concluded. It is the taxpayers who will be carrying the financial burden while at the same time they have been harmed by these officials," is the opinion of Dr. Mulder. "It is the responsibility of Minister Dlamini-Zuma to repair and maintain the integrity of the Department of Home Affairs. She therefore should not only concentrate on investigations in order to combat corruption but should rather look at the quality of the officials who are being appointed in her department. Her department's restrictive focus on transformation figures has lead to effectiveness being sacrificed in a counting of heads exercise. The fact that nearly sixty officials have been suspended in a period of six week due to corruption, should prove to the Minister that she and her department are failing with transformation because effectiveness have been sacrificed and a serious loss of skills have been achieved," Dr. Mulder added.
