It is becoming clear that the ANC government is now using threatening tactics to enforce quotas in the workplace and on the sport fields, regardless of the damage it may cause, Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus’ parliamentary spokesperson on labour, says.

After the minister of sport threatened yesterday to keep international sports teams out of South Africa, the minister of labour is now threatening to use the full might of the law for transformation in the workplace.

Minister Mildred Oliphant warned South African employers who do not adhere to the employment equity requirements, as set out in legislation, that they only have six months to change the situation.

Adv. Alberts says it is a pity that the minister did not also mention the fact that white and brown people have for a long time already been under-represented in the public service, and what she intends doing about it.

He said the unemployment problem will never be solved by continually focussing on managerial levels.

“It is well-known that there are not enough experienced and trained black managers to fill managerial positions throughout the country.

“The minister should rather say whether the ANC sees affirmative action as a permanent aspect of our society. If not, she should scrap affirmative action in the public service, as black people are now over-represented there,” Adv. Alberts says.
