The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) and UASA, the Union and the Airlines Pilots of South Africa (ALPA-SA) – affiliates of FEDUSA at the South African Express Airways (SAX) - have expressed gratitude to Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan and a Task Team from his Department (DPE) for their hard work in securing emergency funding that will enable the troubled airline to pay its employees’ salaries for June 2018.

The Minister has been engaging various institutions for finance arrangements to alleviate SAX’s immediate liquidity constraint which has enabled SAX Acting Chief Executive Matsietsi Mokholo to confirm to staff that their June salaries will now be paid.

Earlier this week FEDUSA made an impassioned plea to Pubic Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan to intervene in the crisis and the federation is pleased.

A statement from the department throws light on behind the scenes efforts to give back SAX its wings again
“An intervention team from the DPE has been working with SAX to address its liquidity and operational problems prior to its operating licence being withdrawn by the Civil Aviation Authority.,” read the statement.
