FAWU: Press Statement by FAWU on the Strike Action by 300 by FAWU members at Coca Cola in pursuit of agency shop agreement

The Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) salutes the 300 workers employed by Coca Cola Canners at Wadevile who are on strike that started today on the on the 6th November 2015 at 06h00 in pursuit of agency shop agreement given that FAWU represent 78% of bargaining unit employees in the company. This strike follows an overwhelming majority yes vote following voting by a secret ballot.

We call on the company to realize that even though FAWU has this high level of representation the demand by members, noble and reasonable, the company management should do the right thing and meet this demand.

It is only about R8 500 that these 71 non-union bargaining unit employees will pay in agency shop fee. It is out of the ordinary that our members will fight for such a demand outside of wage increment and for this FAWU members are congratulated.

In a country with the constitution and with labour rights entrenched in the same constitution, including the right to strike, FAWU will ensure that this demand for agency shop agreement is achieved through our collective power as workers and the union.
