The recently passed expropriation bill is not an answer to the colonial question of land, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has said.

Spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said on Friday that the legislation was based on unjustifiable logic.

The expropriation bill, which sets out new ways in which the government can take land with compensation, was passed with a massive majority in the National Assembly on Thursday.

The only new thing was that government no longer needed consent to expropriate land for public use, Ndlozi said.

"Land in South Africa was acquired through a crime against humanity; colonialism and apartheid. These crimes were crimes of mass death, mass destitution and systematic dehumanisation of all black people," he said.

He said they rejected the idea that, for the purposes of land reform, there had to be money spent by the government.

"No government money must ever be spent to restore ownership and control of the land by black people. The foundation for peace and reconciliation must be justice on the land question, otherwise, we are merely postponing a social time bomb," he said.

Ndlozi reiterated the EFF’s goal to expropriate land without compensation.

African National Congress chief whip Jackson Mthembu said on Thursday that the bill was a necessary intervention for land reform.

"The principle of expropriation through just and equitable compensation is firmly in line with Section 25 of the Constitution, which empowers the State to expropriate land by offering a "just and equitable" compensation to correct the current racially skewed land ownership created by the past apartheid and colonial injustices," he said.
