Eskom is progressing well with the maintenance of its power generating plant whilst supplying the country’s electricity needs. No load shedding is anticipated today.

On 25 April 2016, three very excited learners from South Africa departed from the OR Tambo international airport to participate in the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering, and Environment Project Olympiad (I-SWEEEP) in Houston, USA, taking place from 27 April to 1 May. It is one of the largest science fairs of its kind in the world.

These three learners did exceptionally well in the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Finals in 2015 and therefore had the honour of representing South Africa in the global event. 

David Bullock, a grade 10 learner from Pretoria in Gauteng, entered his project “Slurry as a supplement to coal in electricity generation” in the Energy Non-renewable category.
John Kriel, also a grade 10 learner from Pretoria entered his project “Influence of motorboats on the distribution of weeds in dams” in the Environmental Management category.
Ahmed Ismail, a grade 11 learner from Middelburg in Mpumalanga, entered his project “Pyrolysis” in the Energy renewable solar category.

All three received an honorary mention at the fair.

I-SWEEEP promotes engineering inventions and energy efficiency/management discoveries that will nurture environmentally-friendly technology concepts in secondary education. I-SWEEEP gives learners the opportunity to position themselves as the scientists and engineers of the future. This is a pivotal step in our education efforts to develop an environmentally-conscious global community that inspires personal responsibility in caring for our planet and those who share it.

This global competition provides a platform for the youth to demonstrate their ingenuity in trying to solve the world’s most pressing challenges through science and engineering.
