Eskom: Eskom KwaZulu-Natal reaches electrification milestone of 40 000, and counting

Eskom has electrified over 40 000 households in KwaZulu-Natal by the end of February, with the uMkhanyakude District leading the way with over 13 000 connections.

Eskom’s Group Executive for Distribution, Mongezi Ntsokolo said: “With this achievement, the historic label of KZN being one of the least electrified provinces is slowly but surely disappearing and changing for the better.”

The electrification of uMkhanyakude, which started in April last year, brings to 40 000 the number of households that have been electrified since then until the end of February.

Over 90% of South African households currently have access to electricity. Eskom aspires to achieve universal access by 2020.

The National Treasury has allocated R1-billion for the electrification of over 800 000 households over the next three years to help reach this target.

“Eskom continues to contribute towards the socio-economic developmental goals of the country by intensifying its electrification delivery programme,” said Ntsokolo.
We also urge our new customers to be on the lookout for illegal connections and those who tamper with metres. These are criminal acts which rob communities of a stable electricity supply. Should the community witness such acts, we urge them to send an anonymous SMS to crime line on 32211 to report them. For any other electricity related enquiries, the public should call the Eskom contact centre on 08600 37566.
