In a partnership with the Embassy of Brazil in Pretoria, the City of Johannesburg celebrated yesterday night, August 4th 2016, the eve of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games Rio 2016, by lighting up the Nelson Mandela Bridge in yellow and green - colors of both Brazil and South Africa.

The initiative is part of a simultaneous action promoted by the Government of Brazil along with Governments of other countries and cities around the world. Milestone iconic buildings were lit up in Athens, Buenos Aires, City of Mexico, Doha, Beijing, London, Paris, Shanghai, Sydney and Tokyo. In Rio, the Christ the Redeemer statue also glowed in green and yellow, welcoming visitors and countries participating in the Games.

Johannesburg represented the whole continent of Africa in this international celebration.

With the illumination of the Nelson Mandela Bridge, the City of Johannesburg and the Embassy of Brazil in Pretoria pay tribute to the Olympic spirit of peace, friendship, cooperation and mutual understanding.
