On Monday, 12 November 2018, the Lesotho Highlands Water Commission released water from Hlotse Adit to augment Maseru, Peka, Maputsoe and Hlotse towns.

A total of 3.75 MCM (Mega Cubic Metres) was released from Hlotse Adit , which is the point where there is access to the Phase 1 tunnel and the most direct route to draw water from. The water will  travel through the Caledon to reach Maseru in approximately 7 days. Farmers that are situated near or next to the Caledon River are therefore requested not to abstract water from the river for the duration of this transfer.

The request that is being fulfilled upon request from the Lesotho Government is currently being adhered to due to the agreement that is in place between South Africa and Lesotho. The Lesotho Government observed a severe drought in the above mentioned areas which necessitated the need for the release of water.
