The Department of Labour’s Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) will tomorrow (September 26) conduct a blitz and advocacy sessions in Durban and surrounding areas.
 
The blitz and advocacy sessions will focus on the Private Security, Wholesale & Retail, and Hospitality Sectors. The two-pronged initiative is intended to ensure that employers comply with South Africa’s labour legislation such as the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), the implementation of the employment equity (EE) and unemployment insurance act (UIA).
 
The advocacy will target commuters in taxi ranks, railway stations. It will focus in areas such as: the Durban central business district, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu, Pinetown, Isipingo, Springfield, Pinetown, and Berea.
 
The blitz inspection will focus on Inanda Road, Brickfield, Sparks & Alpine Roads, West Street, Malls (Galleria, Conubia, and Arbour Crossing).
 
Tomorrow’s blitz and advocacy sessions were today preceded by the start of a Department of Labour National Inspectors three-day Conference held at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban.
 
Department of Labour IES Inspector-General, Aggy Moiloa told the inspectors that workplaces were becoming dynamic and this requires of the inspectorate to redefine the way it conducts its business. Moiloa said the Fourth Industrial Revolution was redefining the country’s labour laws.
 
Moiloa reiterated that the professionalisation of the inspectorate was long overdue. She cautioned on the stigmatisation of the inspectorate, calling for ethical conduct.
 
The Department of Labour’s National Inspectors Conference ends on Thursday. The conference brings together team leaders and inspectors specialising in BCEA, EE Act, Employment Audit Services (unemployment insurance and the compensation for occupation injuries and diseases) and employment standards specialists.
 
The Conference will also discuss the issues affecting vulnerable workers in the workplaces, employment standards, Court referrals, challenges faced by the inspectorate, the BCEA, EAS, and EEA norms and standards for 2019/20 financial year.
