DMR: Mining charter progress report

Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe

Mineral Resources Minister Mr Gwede Mantashe today led the second meeting of social partners to receive a progress report on work currently underway in the continued engagements on the Mining Charter, and to resuscitate social dialogue in the mining industry.

This follows the initial meeting of social partners held on 17th and 18th March 2018, during which – inter alia – two task teams, one on transformation, and another on competitiveness and inclusive growth, were established.

The meeting is part of efforts to finalise and gazette the Mining Charter, and develop a Vision 2030 for the mining industry, and a strategy for growth and competitiveness of the sector.

These efforts will entrench the necessary regulatory certainty required for the growth, transformation and competitiveness of the industry. This second meeting of Principals occurs as community engagements on the Charter continue across the country, and what comes out of the community consultations and engagements will be taken into account in drafting the final Charter.

The social partners, represented by the Department, together with organised labour and organised business, have agreed to engage with respect, an open mind, in good faith and treat engagements as confidential.

The Principals have commended the spirit of cooperation and constructive engagement exhibited by all social partners in discussions, and are confident that the final Mining Charter that will be gazetted will deliver value for all stakeholders, and will be in the interests of the industry, the people of South Africa and economy as a whole.
