DIRCO: South Africa sends condolences to Italy following deadly bridge collapse

The Government of the Republc of South Africa has sent a message of condolences to the government and the people of the Italian Republic following the bridge collapse in the city of Genoa on 15 August 2018 which has claimed the lives of more than 30 people.

The message conveys the sadness of the South African people on learning of the deaths as a result of the bride collapse, with condolences messages sent particularly to the families of the deceased.

South Africa and Italy maintain excellent relations covering the full range of activities, both on a governmental level as well as in the private sector.

Apart from the Embassy in Rome, South Africa has a Consulate-General in Italy's commercial capital, Milan.
 
There has been no report of South African citizens affected by the disaster. The South African Embassy in Italy is monitoring developments and stands ready in the event that any South African citizen comes forward with a request for assistance.
