Deputy Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga opens refurbished Library Complex at Highveld Secondary School, 26 Jan

26th January 2015

The Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga, will officially open a high tech ICT Library Complex at Highveld Secondary School a rural school in Mpumalanga on Monday, 26 January 2015.

In 2014, four Highveld Secondary School learners approached Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) and Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) SOCs Management to assist and/or sponsor their institution with ICT infrastructure. The two entities have since responded positively to the request. The School, has an overall staff complement of thirty (30) educators and just over a thousand learners.

To ensure that the proposal was implemented, Broadband Internet connectivity and end-user equipment has been provided - which amongst others, will enable learners to use WEB based educational courses; access the internet to conduct research; access to online physics/chemistry/biology laboratories; exchange of teaching material with international institutions; access to central depository of Department Of Education teaching material and to acquire a variety of skills, especially typing and skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Educator Training on how to use the technology has been provided.
The school has – in the past few years - achieved between 95% and 100% matric pass rate. It is envisaged that the above-mentioned ICT infrastructure will benefit the entire Elukwatini community.
