As part of South Africa’s national and international responsibilities in the area of human rights, South Africa is required to be part of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process.  The UPR is a unique process which involves a review of the human rights records of all UN member States.

On Friday, 22 September 2017 the South African delegation had to report back on its progress made since May 2017 (the review of South Africa was held on 10 May 2017) as well as on progress made in relation to the various recommendations made by the Council. The delegation of South Africa was headed by the Deputy Minister for Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr John Jeffery, MP.

The session provided South Africa with an opportunity to declare what actions have been taken to improve human rights in the country and to overcome any challenges to the enjoyment of human rights.   The Council subsequently adopted the Report. The Deputy Minister will brief the media on the outcome of this process.
