DEPUTY MINISTER CHOHAN TO ADDRESS MEDIA ON MARRIAGE SURNAME CHANGES

The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Fatima Chohan, will on Friday, 24 March 2017, announce a window period initiative to allow women to have their surnames changed to their preferred choice after marriage.

According to legislation, after marriage women have three options in relation to their last names. These include the retention of the maiden surname, assumption of the husband's surname or a double barrel surname. Notably, in various instances, many women have had their surnames changed not as their preferred choice.
