SABC board chairperson Mbulaheni Maguvhe did not know much of what was happening under his watch or could not remember, but believes that the broadcaster can be cleaned up by firing everyone.

Maguvhe finally pitched to testify before the parliamentary inquiry into the affairs of the board yesterday after MPs had to motivate to the Speaker that a summons be served on him following his refusal to appear.

During his testimony, MPs were left flabbergasted as he defended the appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the ever controversial SABC executive whom was found by a court this week to be unsuitable to hold any position at the broadcaster.

 

Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba had a meeting with Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba yesterday, amidst the furore caused by the executive mayor’s recent utterances about illegal immigrants being “criminals” who must leave his city.

Addressing a joint media briefing with Mashaba, Gigaba explained at length that there was indeed some foreign nationals who committed crime, “but they were not different from South Africans born here and live here who commit crimes in South Africa and also have malicious intentions against society”.

 

The University of Cape Town yesterday announced an 8% tuition fee increase for the 2017 academic year.

The decision to increase the tuition and accommodation fees was taken during the council's last meeting on December 10, spokesperson Elijah Moholola said.

He said qualifying students from families with incomes less than R600 000 per year would not have to pay any increases.
