ConCourt to decide whether Bathabile Dlamini must personally pay costs in Sassa debacle

The Constitutional Court is expected today to decide whether former social development minister Bathabile Dlamini should be held personally liable for her handling of last year's South African Social Security Agency debacle.

The court is expected to rule on costs in terms of section 38 of the Superior Courts Act and determine Dlamini's role and responsibility in the establishment and functioning of the work streams referred to in affidavits filed by all the parties.

In 2014, the court ruled that the contract Sassa had signed with social grants distributor Cash Paymaster Services two years prior was illegal and invalid.

Zweli Mkhize ready for Public Protector probe into alleged oil deal kickback

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Zweli Mkhize is ready to answer any questions in a Public Protector probe into allegations that he received a kickback in a multimillion-rand oil deal.

His spokesperson Musa Zondi said Mkhize has written back to the Public Protector welcoming the probe because he believes that the truth will eventually come out because the allegations are bogus.

A news agency reported that the probe was going ahead after the African Democratic Convention lodged a complaint, following a Sunday Times report in June that Mkhize demanded a R4.5-million kickback for allegedly facilitating a loan to an oil company from the Public Investment Corporation.

 

IEC declares Mbulelo Manyati a recognised councillor

The Electoral Commission has declared that embattled DA member Mbulelo Manyati is a recognised councillor in Nelson Mandela Bay.

A news agency is in possession of a letter from the IEC which declares this.

The declaration comes a day after a scuffle broke out during a council meeting on Tuesday after speaker Buyelwa Mafaya ruled that there was an illegal councillor in the chamber.

Manyati was kicked out of the DA after choosing to abstain from a vote of no confidence last month that led to the ousting of Athol Trollip and Jonathan Lawack as executive mayor and speaker respectively.
