Public Protector Thuli Madonsela yesterday pledged R15 000 towards the #FeesMustFall movement.

Madonsela said as long as there was injustice somewhere, sustainable peace could not be experienced anywhere. “Education was important in the delivery of the constitutional dream of the freed potential and improved quality of life of all,” she said.

She was speaking at the IUA –United Communal Fund fundraising dinner in Durban.

Students across South Africa had been protesting for free education at various universities following Minister of Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande’s announcement that state universities could increase fees for 2017, capped at eight percent.

 

Parents need to play a bigger role in debates over university fees, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande said yesterday.

Nzimande said the parents were leaving big decisions in the hands of 19 and 20-year-old students.

He said government had started talking to parents about their children. "They were the ones helping their children get through university, "he added.

Nzimande said those who wanted free education were being reckless.

The University of the Witwatersrand’s management is trying to ensure normal operations resume at the institution.

Wits deputy vice-chancellor Tawana Kupe said its executive committee met yesterday to discuss the violence on its campuses and to find ways to resume the academic programme.

Work was suspended for the week on Tuesday evening after students and private security guards threw rocks at one another outside the Great Hall, on the East campus.

Kupe said the parties needed to talk, as violence was not a solution.
