Zuma addresses key issues at UN

President Jacob Zuma, in his address to the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, in New York, focused on human rights, peace and security, and socio-economic development.

And the South African head of State didn’t shy away from addressing controversial issues, including the occupation of Palestine and the Western Sahara.

Zuma pointed out that there was still unfinished business in committing to addressing the challenges of poverty, under-development and inequality.

 

Peacekeepers essential to South Sudan

The UN Commission on Human Rights has warned that should South Sudan President Salva Kiir hold elections before he accepts peacekeepers, a ceasefire and political opposition, the country’s war will only worsen.

Juba has been reluctant to accept the full deployment of a 4 000-strong regional force, to complement the UN Mission in South Sudan already stationed there, as requested a year ago by the East African block IGAD and backed by the UN.

Following intense regional and international pressure Kiir’s government eventually agreed to the deployment.

However, the full deployment has faced obstacles, with Kiir accusing the UN of meddling in the sovereignty of the world’s newest country and behaving beyond its mandate.

 

Police Minister says Majority of farmers are not racists

The majority of farmers in South Africa are not racist and should continue to do their work without fear, Police Minister Fikile Mbalula has said.

He was addressing the media at the South African Police Service head office in Pretoria yesterday, following a meeting with AgriSA to discuss the national rural safety programme.

Mbalula announced that the Saps has partnered with AgriSA in an effort to end farm attacks in rural areas.
