Cosatu’s new president promises to put workers first

Despite her role in the ruling party, the newly nominated president of Cosatu said her mandate lay with workers and she would not be conflicted.

Outgoing Cosatu president Sdumo Dlamini came in for criticism for his strong allegiance to former president Jacob Zuma, with many saying he put his political interests ahead of the plight of workers.

On Tuesday‚ Zingiswa Losi became the first woman president of the federation after she was nominated for the post, unopposed, at the federation’s 13th national congress in Johannesburg.

 

ANC in Cape Town takes 'dim view' of soon-to-be mayor Dan Plato

The ANC in the City of Cape Town has taken "a dim view" of the DA's decision to have Dan Plato replace Patricia de Lille as mayor when her recent resignation takes effect on October 31.

The DA made this announcement yesterday.

ANC Cape Town chief whip Thandi Makasi said in a statement that the DA overlooked other women leaders like speaker in the provincial legislature Sharna Fernandez [and] Mayco member Suzette Little and added that the party opted for an untrustworthy Dan Plato.

She said there was nothing to be said about Plato’s two-year stint as mayor between 2009 and 2011.

 

Godongwana to approach State capture commission after banks' testimony

Chairperson of the ANC's subcommittee on economic transformation Enoch Godongwana says he will approach the commission of inquiry into State capture to give his side of the story about meetings the political party held with some of South Africa's big banks after they stopped doing business with Gupta-owned businesses.

Godongwana told a news agency on the sidelines of trade union federation Cosatu's 13th congress on Tuesday that he just wanted to give his side to the commission.

He, along with ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe, who was then secretary general, and deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte, met with Standard Bank and Absa while FNB declined an invitation.
