57 people murdered in SA per day

The number of murders committed in South Africa breached the 20 000 mark, with crime statistics released by the South African Police Service in Parliament today indicating a 6.9 percent increase in the murder rate.

Head of police crime research and statistics Major General Norman Sekhukhune said that translated to 57 people being killed per day in South Africa.

The total number of murders recorded by the Saps from April 1 2017 to March 31 2018 were 20 366 compared to 19 016 reported in the previous year.

Attempted murders were also on the rise, increasing 0.2 percent, from 18 205 to 18 233.

ANC Women's League to honour Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Albertina Sisulu

The African National Congress Women's League will celebrate the lives of struggle icons Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Albertina Nontsikelelo Sisulu.

In a statement, the women's league said it will also commemorate the launch of the Bantu Women’s League, a predecessor of the ANCWL.

ANCWL Secretary-General Meokgo Matuba said Madikizela-Mandela and Sisulu were icons and heroines of the struggle for liberation and soldiers for women who would have been presidents of the ANC and the country had patriarchy not prevailed.

Davies to attend G20 meeting

South Africa's trade and industry minister Rob Davies will attend a meeting with peers from the G20 global grouping in Argentina set to focus on the agriculture sector, his department said on Tuesday.

The G20 is an international forum which aims to discuss policy to promote international financial stability.

The department of trade and industry said the trade ministers meeting will focus on key factors for G20 policy making to support participation and upgrading in inclusive global value chains in the agricultural sector at a regional and global level.
