The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse and the South African National Roads Agency are at loggerheads over a statement that citizens who are members of Outa and who defaulted on e-tolls would not be prosecuted.

In a statement issued yesterday, Outa claimed that Sanral had agreed not to prosecute e-toll defaulters who are members of the civil rights body. Sanral however refuted the claim, saying Outa’s statement was false and a mere fundraising exercise for the organisation.

According to Outa, Sanral had agreed after “months of negotiation” to stay all legal claims against current and future Outa members.

 

The Eastern Cape ANC could elect new leaders before the end of the year, its provincial leader said yesterday.

Eastern Cape Rural Development MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane said the auditing of branches had begun and the party’s regional conference was expected to take place in November.

Divisions in the region led to President Jacob Zuma disbanding its regional executive committee in 2015 and appointing a task team to take over. 

 

President Jacob Zuma is sly and unpredictable, former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor said yesterday.

Addressing the Cape Town Press Club as a member of the South African First Forum, she was asked about Zuma’s future and who could replace him.

She sighed and said Zuma appeared clever but he was actually sly and added that it was exactly for that reason that the apparatus of the governing party was largely of patronage.

She said the ANC Youth League and Women’s League, and the national leadership to a large extent, were elected on the basis of patronage.
