City of Cape Town gets go-ahead to deviate from municipal act to deal with drought

Minister of Finance Malusi Gigaba has approved the City of Cape Town's request to deviate from Municipal Finance Management Act regulations in order to urgently deal with the drought, the City said yesterday.

The City in a statement said Gigaba informed it that he had been advised that potential regulatory challenges might hamper successful implementation of water resilience measures whose aim is to help the City continue to provide water to its residents.

City of Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille explained that the minister's go-ahead allowed her "to immediately incur and approve unforeseen and unavoidable expenditure in terms of the Act". 

 

Buthelezi says he did not walk the last 42 years alone

As he closes a chapter on his political life, Inkatha Freedom Party leader Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi says he plans to spend more time with his wife, Princess Irene.

After more than four decades at the helm of the party he founded in 1975, the IFP leader announced during a press briefing in Durban on Sunday that he would be stepping down at the party's next national general elective conference.

Velenkosini Hlabisa, mayor of Hlabisa, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, has been nominated by a meeting of party members to take over the reins.

 

ANC says all lives matter, not just whites'

The ANC yesterday called on the farming community to appreciate all lives and not just that of white people.

Responding to the #BlackMonday campaign which protested against the murder of farmers around the country, the party said the march had characteristics of racism.

ANC's spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said, the ANC condemned the despicable and racist behaviour by some who took part in the so-called #BlackMonday campaign by groupings representing the farming community.
