ANC and alliance partners want urgent inquiry into ‘State capture’

The ANC and its Tripartite Alliance partners have agreed on the need for an urgent Judicial Commission of Inquiry into “State capture” in a meeting that was held at the ANC headquarters, Luthuli House yesterday.

The statement issued today by alliance partners ANC, the SACP, Cosatu and the South African National Civic Organisation said the alliance reconfirmed its commitment to the establishment of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry as a matter of urgency.

The communists are livid after their leader Blade Nzimande was axed last week by Zuma from his job as Minister of Higher Education. As a result, the SACP has reiterated calls for Zuma to step down.

 

Nzimande says South Africa is becoming a 'securocrat state'

South African Communist Party leader Blade Nzimande has warned that the country is becoming a "securocrat state".

The former minister of higher education and training launched a scathing attack against President Jacob Zuma.

It comes at a time when the two former allies met for the first time - since Nzimande was booted out of Zuma's Cabinet - with alliance partners at Luthuli House.

Nzimande is of the view that the country is in the early stages of a "securocrat state", where "the political elite, brazenly use state institutions to ruthlessly acquire wealth and crush whoever stands in their way".

 

Kenya begins counting ballots after controversial election rerun

Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission today started counting ballots a day after the presidential election rerun, which saw about six-million voters turnout, Kenya’s Daily Nation reports.

However, the IEBC had pushed the polls for four Nyanza counties, where the National Super Alliance opposition party of Raila Odinga is popular, ahead to Saturday.

Many voters stayed away in the Nyanza counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay and Migori after Odinga called on his supporters to boycott the rerun of the August 8 elections, which were annulled by the Supreme Court on the grounds of irregularities.
