Mkhize welcomes R3.2-billion allocated to drought, water scarcity

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Zweli Mkhize has welcomed the funding allocated to deal with drought that continues to wreak havoc in parts of the country. 

In a Medium Term Budget Policy Statement speech to Parliament yesterday, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni said R3.2-billion had been allocated to deal with the effects of drought and water scarcity while R1.6-billion would be used to grapple with the impact of storms and fires. 

Mkhize, who is chairperson of an inter-ministerial task team on drought and water scarcity, said these allocations would assist affected communities in the KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces, where a state of disaster was declared as the damage caused exceeded their capacity.

 

Western Cape says ready to support inaugural SA investment summit

The Western Cape, run by the main opposition Democratic Alliance, today expressed its support for an investment conference convened by President Cyril Ramaphosa and said it would use it to showcase opportunities in the province.

Ramaphosa announced the Oct 25 to 27 summit during his State of the Nation address in February as part of efforts to boost confidence in the country's economy and help spur sustainable and inclusive growth.

He will officially open it on Friday.

Western Cape Minister of Economic Opportunities Alan Winde said the province would showcase its thriving tech and finance hubs, world class infrastructure and wide skills base.

 

City of Cape Town to table Bowmans reports into maladministration

The City of Cape Town council will today table two reports by law firm Bowmans (previously known as Bowman Gilfillan), into maladministration in the city.

The council will decide on what recommendations and conclusions it will adopt from the reports.

Outgoing mayor Patricia de Lille is seeking to discredit the reports, questioning the credibility of the law firm.

In one report into corruption and maladministration in the City of Cape Town, De Lille is reportedly found to be complicit in irregularities, while in the second report, she is absolved.
