Home Affairs DG's challenge of suspension to be heard in court

Director-general of the department of home affairs Mkuseli Apleni is expected to challenge his suspension by Home Affairs Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria today.

Mkhize announced Apleni's precautionary suspension in a short statement on September 18 and did not give reasons for the suspension.

Apleni’s attorney SJ Thema will argue that the minister does not have the powers to suspend him.

 

Eastern Cape endorses Ramaphosa for ANC president

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa's presidential campaign has received another boost with a second province endorsing him to take over the reins in the ANC's heated presidential race.

ANC Eastern Cape chairperson Oscar Mabuyane confirmed that the province would back Ramaphosa at the December elective conference to replace Jacob Zuma as party president.

Mabuyane replaced Premier Phumulo Masualle as chair at the chaotic provincial conference this month.

 

Mandela slates 'insensitive' proposal to exclude coloured and Indian BEE contractors

A proposal to exclude South Africans who are coloured and those of Indian descent from lucrative state contracts in KwaZulu-Natal is ill-conceived and designed to only benefit the advantaged, said MP and chief Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela yesterday.

This was after the Sunday Times reported on a proposal by KwaZulu-Natal MEC for economic development Sihle Zikalala to reconfigure black economic empowerment policies to benefit "black Africans" for state contracts worth more than R50-million.

The grandson of former president Nelson Mandela said the proposal flies in the face of the significant contribution that other sectors of the historically disadvantaged had made to the struggle for freedom, justice and democracy.
