Making headlines:

'Land expropriation without compensation' is South Africa's 'word' of the year

CSIR seeks municipal partners for energy master plan pilot project

And, the World Health Organisation to meet on Congo's Ebola outbreak

The Pan South African Language Board has announced that ''land expropriation without compensation'' is South Africa's Word of the Year.

The winner went head-to-head against ‘commission of inquiry’ and ‘Thuma Mina’. The winning word was selected as that which captures the philosophy, mood, or obsessions of the year.

Media data was analysed to determine the prominence of the keywords within the media and to identify the frequency that they were used in credible print, broadcast and online media. Usage of the winning word increased significantly in 2018.

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research aims to partner with a metropolitan council and a district municipality to compile pilot municipal energy master plans for electricity.

These master plans will provide the two councils with insight into the best electricity supply blends for their respective grids.

CSIR Energy Centre head Dr Clinton Carter-Brown says that recent changes to the electricity supply industry, globally and domestically, are making it increasingly attractive for South African municipalities to procure electricity from local energy sources.

A master plan could help a municipality in designing a more sustainable tariff architecture that disentangles the fixed and variable costs.

The World Health Organization will convene an emergency committee to decide whether Congo's Ebola outbreak is a public health emergency of international concern as confirmed cases and deaths from the virus spiralled.

The committee of experts may make recommendations to manage the outbreak, which was declared on August 1 and has worsened, with a risk of the virus spreading from north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo into Uganda and Rwanda.

Congo's health ministry said on Monday that in the past week 33 people were confirmed to have the Ebola virus and 24 of them had died.
