Making headlines: ANC wants to oust DA Ekurhuleni Mayor in motion of no confidence; Women in Gqeberha march for gender equality following NMB MMC appointments; And, South Africa abstains from UN vote on Russia's annexation of Ukraine territories

 

ANC wants to oust DA Ekurhuleni Mayor in motion of no confidence

The African National Congress in Ekurhuleni has submitted a motion of no confidence in Mayor Tania Campbell and accused her of racialising service delivery in the metro.

ANC chief whip in the metro councillor Jongizizwe Dlabathi said under Campbell's leadership "service delivery has taken a racial turn”, and that townships, where the majority black communities reside, have been clearly neglected.

Dlabathi went on to say that the DA has actually pursued a so called “anti-pro-poor budget”, after it removed free basic electricity in the municipality.

The DA has rubbished the reasons cited for the motion of no confidence.

DA federal council chairperson Helen Zille said opposition parties always made up excuses in their attempts at unseating a party in power.

 

Women in Gqeberha march for gender equality following NMB MMC appointments

The Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa, joined by organisations such as the provincial African National Congress Women’s League, faith-based organisations and unions, marched against gender inequality today.

The provincial march was led by Social Development MEC and ANCWL convener Bukiwe Fanta who spoke of gender-based violence challenges and poverty in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, where she says leadership positions are given to men.

This follows the appointment of the mayoral committee under the multiparty, Democratic Alliance-led coalition which she says has one female councillor and 13 male councillors. Fanta wants new Mayor Retief Odendaal to explain why there are not more women in the council.

 

And, South Africa abstains from UN vote on Russia's annexation of Ukraine territories

South Africa was one of 35 countries that abstained from a vote condemning Russia's annexation of Ukrainian territories.  

On Wednesday, members of the UN General Assembly voted against the annexation of partially occupied territories in Ukraine. 

North Korea, Belarus, Syria, Nicaragua and Russia itself were the only countries that voted against the resolution. It was passed after 143 countries voted in favour of it.

Earlier this year, South Africa and others abstained from voting on a resolution to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council.

Some of those that took a non-aligned stance alongside South Africa earlier this year, took a different stance during this week's vote.
