Making headlines: Judgment expected in Zuma spy tapes appeal request, Mkhize tells Sasco to avoid the politics of money And, expelled EFF councillors' case struck off the roll

The Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein is expected to hand down judgment in the appeal by President Jacob Zuma and the National Prosecuting Authority in the spy tapes saga.

Zuma and the NPA asked for leave to appeal a judgment of the Gauteng North High Court last year, which ruled in favour of the DA, setting aside the 2009 decision by the NP

A’s former Director of Public Prosecution Mokotedi Mpshe to discontinue the corruption case against Zuma, on the basis of irrationality. 

On September 14, the SCA reserved judgment after Zuma’s lawyers admitted that the quashing of hundreds of criminal charges against him were “irrational”.

 

The ANC treasurer-general and presidential hopeful Zweli Mkhize called on Nelson Mandela University's South African Students Congress leaders not to get caught up in the "politics of money".

Mkhize was speaking at a Nelson Mandela memorial lecture ahead of the university's student representative council elections next week.

Mkhize has emerged in recent weeks as a potential successor to Zuma, who is due to step down as ANC leader at the party's elective conference in December and as national president in 2019.

 

The Gauteng South High Court yesterday was struck off the roll a case in which six Economic Freedom Fighters councillors sought to interdict their removal from the Mogale City council by the EFF following their expulsion from the party.

The EFF said the court ruled against them and dismissed their case with costs.

They were fired after the completion of a disciplinary process last Saturday for voting with the ANC.
