Wits students continue protest amid heavy security

Protesting students at the University of Witswaterstrand continued to demonstrate this morning amid a heavy presence of police and private security.

The students were allowed to enter the institution’s Braamfontein main campus.

This comes after the university resolved to open today after classes were disrupted for about two weeks following the #FeesMustFall protest for free education.

 

The ANC in the Greater Joburg Region yesterday accused the Gauteng provincial government of abusing state resources to further the DA's political ends.

ANC spokesperson Jolidee Matongo said this came after observations that the new Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba had been using the metro’s communication resources and outright bending the rules of engagement between government and political party in the institution.

Matongo said that Mashaba had allegedly been forcing local government employees to issue politically slanted media statements.

The DA also issued statements pointing fingers at the ANC for two failed community meetings in Orange Farm, alleged withholding of just over 2 000 title deeds which were in fact only issued by the Deeds Office shortly before the recent elections.

 

Khwezi, the woman who accused President Jacob Zuma of rape has died, her family said yesterday, releasing her name for the first time since the rape trial that threatened to end his political career but ended in acquittal.

She died on Saturday. The cause of death was not given by the family.

The Kuzwayo family said a private funeral service would be held, followed later by a public memorial service.
