The SABC board must go, members of parliament resolved yesterday.

After lengthy deliberations all political parties, who were members of the Portfolio Committee on Communications, agreed that the remaining board members should resign from their positions.

In a rare show of unity, MPs agreed that the current board was dysfunctional and ill-governed, neglecting its fiduciary duty towards the public and should therefore be dissolved.

During the committee meeting two SABC board members Vusi Mavuso and Krish Naidoo tendered their resignations in the presence of their fellow board members.

 

The ANC’s critics are creating the impression that the party has done nothing to improve access to higher education, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said yesterday.

Mantashe was speaking at the opening of the Black Management Forum’s annual conference in Midrand.

He said when people referred to the Freedom Charter they only read the headline and ignored that the document said access to university education should be granted on merit and that basic education should be free and compulsory he said.  

 

The South African Student Congress is losing confidence in Cabinet, particularly President Jacob Zuma and his deputy Cyril Ramaphosa, it said yesterday.

Sasco leader Thabo Majola said Zuma had failed to ensure his Cabinet implemented ANC policies on free education, and to provide leadership to solve the impasse between students and Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande.

Sasco decided at its national working committee meeting yesterday that Zuma and Ramaphosa had to meet student leaders in less than a week.
