R100-billion boost for Ramaphosa's Jobs Summit

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced yesterday that the financial sector has committed R100-billion over the next five years to support black businesses, as the country battles to boost growth and reduce unemployment.

Addressing the Jobs Summit in Johannesburg, Ramaphosa said much was needed to be done to lift the economy out of its slump.

He said government will work with the financial sector to develop facilities for financing at preferential rates and extended repayment terms.

The summit, the third of its kind, is a collaboration between business, labour and government, and aims to find ways to address the country's stubbornly high unemployment rate, currently at 27.2%.

Edna Molewa remembered for her loyalty and selflessness

Hundreds of mourners honoured the late Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa during an official ANC memorial service that was held at the Brits Rugby Stadium in the North West.

Family, friends and dignitaries joined the hundreds of mourners who flocked to the stadium to pay tribute to the late minister, who was in 2004 the first woman premier of the province of the North West.

ANC secretary general Ace Magashule delivered the keynote address at the service and described Molewa as a "selfless, respectful and loyal" person.

UN calls on Cameroonians to go to the polls on Sunday

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged all Cameroonians to exercise their democratic rights in Sunday’s presidential elections, adding that they should be peaceful, credible and inclusive.

In a statement from his spokesperson, the UN chief also called on all stakeholders to “exercise restraint before, during and after the election”.

According to media reports, nine candidates are contesting the elections to the country’s highest body.
