Cosatu says fight against State capture cannot be left to next generation

The fight against those who have captured and stolen from South Africa cannot be left to the next generation, said the general secretary of labour federation the Congress of South African Trade Unions, Bheki Ntshalintshali.

Ntshalintshali made the comments yesterday during his delivery of a message of support at the South African Democratic Teachers' Union national general council.

He said the federation had decided that it must stand up and condemn corruption and State capture.

Ntshalintshali also thanked those who came out to support Cosatu when it took to the streets against State capture in Johannesburg last week.

 

Water department frustrates MPs with conflicting annual reports

Members of Parliament on the portfolio committee on water and sanitation were left frustrated yesterday after receiving two conflicting reports on the department of water's leaking financials.

Both the department and the office of the auditor general reported to the committee on the 2016/17 annual reports, but differed on key figures and percentages in their respective reports.

The department disputed the R1.6-billion figure of its irregular expenditure, and the costs incurred at the Water Trading Entity and the Trans Caledon Tunnel Authority from the auditor general's report.

Two of the biggest running projects of the department, the Giyani and Mopani water projects, received poor audit outcomes, achieving material findings in all aspects.

 

ANC to stage 'pay back the money' picket outside De Lille's home

The ANC is set to picket outside Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille’s private home today to demand that she "pay back the money" for security upgrades to her house.  

The party would also approach Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane with "proof" so that she could investigate the upgrades, said ANC Dullah Omar Region spokesperson Khaya Yozi.

De Lille and MMC for safety, security and social services JP Smith were suspended from DA activities on Tuesday, following De Lille’s statement the day before wherein she said she had briefed her lawyers on "malicious and defamatory remarks" Smith had made relating to the security upgrades.
