AfriForum to challenge Ramaphosa land reforms in court

South African advocacy group AfriForum will today challenge in court President Cyril Ramaphosa's plan to change the constitution to allow land expropriation without compensation.

According to court papers, Afriforum is questioning the legality of a key parliamentary committee report that recommended a change to the constitution.

Afriforum says the committee illegally appointed an external service-provider to compile the report and also failed to consider more than 100 000 submissions opposing land expropriation without compensation.

 

The City of Cape Town will lower water restrictions from Level 5 to Level 3 effective from December 1.

This means that every person can now use 105 litres of water a day, up from 70 litres a day.

Tariffs will be lowered and if residents use less than 6 000 litres per month, they can now expect to pay 35.5% less.

 

A gender equity bill, which would have ensured that not more than two-thirds of parliament can be of the same gender, has failed to pass in the Kenyan National Assembly.

The house failed to raise the necessary numbers to pass the two-thirds gender equity bill so it deferred the vote to next year.

The delaying of the bill, some argued, would give MPs time to lobby their colleagues to support the bill. However, others countered stating that the bill had been lobbied for, and discussed, for a month and that deferment was unnecessary.
