Making headlines: Ramaphosa set for presidential nod from ANC in Gauteng, Mnangagwa says the people have spoken And, mixed feelings over new police commissioner

The ANC in Gauteng looks set to officially nominate Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa when the province holds its provincial general council next weekend.

An official tally of the nomination process shows that Ramaphosa’s rival, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has performed poorly in the province, getting less than 60 branch nominations, with the process near completion.

Ninety-three percent of the branches have completed their branch general meetings to choose presidential candidates to replace President Jacob Zuma at the December elective conference.

Zimbabwe's new leader Emmerson Mnangagwa told a cheering crowd in Harare on Wednesday that the country was entering a new stage of democracy following Robert Mugabe's removal as president after nearly four decades in power.

Mnangagwa returned to the country earlier in the day, having fled for his safety when the 93-year-old former leader sacked him as vice president two weeks ago to smooth a path to the succession for his much younger wife Grace.

Zimbabwe was once one of Africa's most promising economies but suffered decades of decline as Mugabe pursued policies that included the violent seizure of white-owned commercial farms and money-printing that led to hyperinflation.

 

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate and Parliament's police portfolio committee have expressed confidence in newly-appointed national police commissioner Lieutenant-General Khehla Sitole, but the DA is less enthused.

IPID head Robert McBride said senior management congratulated Sitole on his appointment adding that his appointment will go a long way in bringing stability to the SAPS and enhance focus in the fight against crime.

The DA, meanwhile, were less enthused with the appointment, saying Sitole would sympathise with President Jacob Zuma.
