No hint of early elections as Ramaphosa meets with IEC

President Cyril Ramaphosa met with the Electoral Commission of South Africa in Parliament yesterday to receive an update on preparations for the 2019 elections.

Rumours of early elections started in March, following an ANC national executive committee meeting that debated the possibility of bringing the national vote forward.

Presidency spokesperson Khusela Diko said that the IEC updated Ramaphosa on preparations towards the sixth national and provincial elections, due in 2019.

Gupta-owned mines' rehabilitation funds case back in court

An application by the trustees of the mining rehabilitation funds of two Gupta-owned companies, to reverse the attachment of about R1.7-billion by the National Director of Public Prosecutions, is expected be heard in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria today.

The money was seized by the National Prosecuting Authority's Asset Forfeiture Unit.

Trustees of the rehabilitation funds controlled by the mines approached the North Gauteng High Court for a reconsideration of the seizure of the funds.

 

SIU to investigate company associated with ANC spokesperson

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has referred alleged financial irregularities in the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to the Special Investigating Unit.

The Gauteng government said that the alleged irregularities involving the contracting and prepayment made to Enviro Mobi, a company which is associated with ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe, were some of the matters referred to the SIU for investigation.

The department’s internal audit and the provincial treasury’s report raised problems regarding a prepayment of R26-million made to Enviro Mobi for the supply of motorised three-wheelers.
