The co-operative governance department has lashed out against EFF leader Julius Malema who accused the electoral body of rigging elections at the weekend.

COGTA spokesperson Legadima Leso said on Monday that the statement by the EFF at its elections manifesto launch was wrong, misleading and malicious.

During the launch of the EFF's 2016 local government election manifesto in Orlando, Soweto on Saturday, Malema said there were only two parties contesting the elections, his party and the ANC.

Malema then accused the Independent Electoral Commission of being the third party contesting the elections.

 

In what could be seen as response to EFF leader Julius Malema’s threats to take up arms against the ANC-led government, President Jacob Zuma on Sunday criticised "political opportunists" who would wreak havoc on the country.

Zuma told thousands of ANC, Cosatu and SACP supporters at a May Day rally in Morelete Park, Mamelodi that desperate elements seemed hell-bent to promote anarchy and chaos.

Zuma also took the opportunity to berate "opportunists" who had switched loyalties.

 

The only way workers could bring their exploitation to an end was if they stood together, the EFF said on Sunday.

"Any movement that brings about the disunity of the workers is anti-revolutionary and only advances the capitalist grip on our people," EFF spokesperson, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, said.

As the country commemorated International Workers' Day, Ndlozi said the labour movement in South Africa had suffered divisions, losses and regression.

He accused trade union leaders of chasing self-enrichment and their own careers rather than fighting and defending workers' interests.
