Making headlines: Legal expert says NPA has failed miserably in Vrede Dairy case, Mali president confirms he will run for re-election And, Guinea's Conde reshuffles government as political tensions rise

 

The National Prosecuting Authority's Asset Forfeiture Unit, which recently obtained a provisional restraint order against eight accused in the Estina Vrede Dairy project, has failed miserably, a legal expert has said.

The Gupta Leaks revealed in 2017 how at least R30-million paid to the Guptas, via the dairy farm, ended up funding the family's lavish Sun City wedding in 2013.

Advocate Deon Pool said that the first mistake the NPA made was to advertise in the media that they were going after the assets.

Pool said a preservation order, by nature, is done in chambers and it is supposed to be a secret.

NPA spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku said they would be filing a forfeiture application soon and added that their loss was not a reflection of the strength of their criminal case against the eight accused.

 

Mali's President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita announced on state TV yesterday that he would run for re-election in a poll scheduled for the end of July.

He faces growing political opposition in the capital Bamako, especially among a disaffected youth, and a raging Islamist insurgency and tit-for-tat ethnic killing in the north.

A dozen other candidates have announced their candidacy, the strongest of which is seen as opposition leader Soumaila Cisse, a former finance minister.

 

Guinea's President Alpha Conde launched a reshuffle of his government - appointing new finance, budget and security ministers - as the West African country faces civil unrest and strikes in the crucial mining sector.

No official reason was given for the sweeping changes announced by state TV on Sunday.

The changes came amid heightened political tensions and speculation Conde may be seeking to modify the constitution ahead of a 2020 election.
