Government wage deal to go ahead, despite urgent call for more consultation

The Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council will today present the wage agreement to trade unions and government to be signed, as the Federation of Unions of South Africa has called for a postponement and asked for more time to consult with members.    

Fedusa’s affiliate, the Public Servants Association is the only union who has not agreed to the three-year, above-inflation wage deal. All seven Congress of South African Trade Unions affiliates are ready to sign the agreement after the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union consulted with its members over the weekend.

Despite Fedusa’s general secretary Dennis George urging the other unions not to sign the wage deal, PSCBC’s general secretary Frikkie de Bruin confirmed that the signing of the deal will go ahead today which the Minister of Public Service and Administration Ayanda Dlodlo is set to attend.

 

Zimbabwe to hold elections in July

Zimbabwe will hold elections in July, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has confirmed.  

This comes amid calls by the ruling Zanu-PF party's rivals and civic organisations for the president to announce the election road map that spells out the actual poll dates.     

Speaking yesterday to thousands of his supporters during a rally in Mutare’s Sakubva stadium, Mnangagwa urged them to show political maturity by avoiding violence and not responding to provocation. 

 

Congo to begin Ebola vaccinations today

Health workers in Democratic Republic of Congo will begin a vaccination campaign today aimed at containing an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus.

Jessica Ilunga said that 4 000 doses of vaccine were shipped on Saturday to the city of Mbandaka, which last week registered its first cases of the disease in an urban area since the outbreak was declared earlier this month.

The outbreak is Congo's ninth since the disease made its first known appearance in the 1970s.
